Box office :
Dabangg may not be a great piece of art but it is certainly turning out to be the biggest blockbuster in the history of Bollywood. The film that opened on Friday at the box office has beaten the first weekend collection of Aamir Khanstarrer 3 Idiots.
The film has grossed Rs 14.5 crore on the first day, surpassing 3 Idiots, which collected Rs 13 crore in Christmas last year. The box office collection of the film jumped by about 30% more on the weekend, making it the biggest grosser in the first weekend opening of any film ever. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said, “Dabangg is one film that everyone wants to watch because of the hype that Salman created before release. It has generated tremendous curiosity amongst the audiences,’’ Adarsh said. He said the long festive weekend will also work to the film’s advantage. “One really cannot comment on whether it will surpass 3 Idiot’s collection but the initial collection is certainly a clear indication that the film is going to be one of the biggest hits ever,’’ he said.
The film has collected triple of what S a l m a n Khan’s last big hit Wanted g ro s s e d . Suniel Wadhwa, an independent distributor and analyst, said: “Wanted, which was an Eid release last year, had collected Rs 4.62 crore on the first day.The way Dabangg is going at the box office, it is likely to wind up with a Rs 45-48 crore for opening weekend, beating 3 Idiots, which collected Rs 41 crore for the opening weekend.’’
Producer Arbaaz Khan is keeping his fingers crossed. “The film has certainly crossed 3 Idiots but I don’t want to jump the gun and say it will break the record. One will have to wait till Monday to know where the film stands at the box office.’’ Khan said. He added, “It is definitely Salman Khan’s best performance ever.’’
Trade analyst Amod Mehra said, “Not one film of Salman Khan had ever crossed Rs 50 crore, but Dabangg has done it in the first week of its release. Even his last release, Wanted had only grossed about Rs 46 crore. Nobody in the industry even dreamt that it will be Salman Khan who will break Aamir Khan’s record, but the actor has done it.’’
Vikas Mohan of the Association of Motion Picture Producers and Television Programme said it is Salman Khan’s hard work that Dabangg has reaped such results at the box office. “The film has overtaken ‘3 Idiots’ at almost all centres in the country. In Rajasthan, the film has collected Rs 81 lakh as compared to 3 Idiots, which had made Rs 59 lakh. In West Bengal, the film’s collection is about Rs 80 lakh, which is about Rs 8 lakh more than 3 Idiots. “In Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the film has collected about Rs 25 lakh, which again is more than 3 Idiots,’’ Mohan said.
Most of the industry pundits credit the collection to the hype and promotion created around the film. Mehra said, “The only known face the film had was Salman Khan and the rest of the cast and crew were unknown to the industry and the audiences. The entire credit of the success goes to Salman Khan for the non-stop promotion,’’ he said.
